West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's call for the public to shift focus from protests to Durga Puja celebrations has drawn strong criticism from the grieving mother of the Kolkata trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered.
The victim's mother slammed Banerjee's remarks as "insensitive," stating, "We will never celebrate Durga Puja again. Let her return our daughter. Would she have said the same if it had happened in her family?" She also accused the Chief Minister of trying to suppress the protests demanding justice for her daughter.
The protests, which have been ongoing for a month, are led by junior doctors and supported by the public, seeking justice for the 31-year-old doctor murdered at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Banerjee urged for calm and a return to festivities, assuring the public that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would complete the probe soon.
